Student Representative? What's that? It is a great role that one girl and one boy run for every year at my co-op. Last year two of my wonderful friends were elected. Rachel and Jakob did a fantastic job. They are part of the reason I decided to run for Student Rep this year.
To start this road of politics I had to write a speech. I spent some time trying to figure out what I wanted to say. I knew what I wanted to say, but I felt like I couldn't phrase it convincingly enough. In the end I decided to state a few ideas I had and not over promise. I went with the idea that we could worry about the election and then go from there with what we wanted to do as a group.
It was a fun election and in the end I was elected the girl student rep. Luke, the boy student rep won as well and he is such a great guy to work with. I have enjoyed getting to know him and sharing ideas back and forth. Luke is so funny, smart and has fantastic ideas about what we should do to help secondary. I also enjoy that I get to work with one of my favorite teachers, Mrs. Memeo. She graciously volunteered to be our student rep lesion. She is amazing at being able to organize all our ideas into a cohesive thought. It is sweet that she takes time out of her busy schedule to help us keep on track with our political duties.
One of my jobs as student rep is to help plan the Christmas party. We all had so much fun at the Christmas party last year. We decided to use some ideas from last year and then add a few of our own. The party entitled tasks that needed to be done and I had the privilege of creating and sending out Alumni invitations to the 2015 graduates of NSHC. It made me incredibly happy to be able honor these graduates and I am excited to catch up with them at the party.
Now that you know a bit about my tasks and how I got elected, let me tell you what I have learned in my brief time as a student rep. I found that I really get to know the students. For some reason just having the title. I feel like it makes me more motivated to go and get to know the students better. These dear friends are becoming like family and it is exciting to go on this adventure called high school. I am overwhelmed by the support, encouragement and grace the students have. My friends were so encouraging the day I had to give my speech. I was very nervous and they were there to hug and cheer me on. Working with a co-repetitive is great. To have that person to back you up. To take the stuff that you dropping left and right, to bounce ideas off of is awesome.
My junior year is going to be incredible and this experience is one of the coolest things I have done. If you are not in a homeschool co-op I would encourage you to find one. I love the one I am apart of. The people I get to interact with are phenomenal and the teachers teach intriguing classes. Thank you to all who let us do this.
